Church of Milkel

"You just entered the church of Milkel, a warm welcome to you" - So ran the first sentence of the church-owned description of the building and historical background.

At the beginning of the 14th century the earl of palace Milkel, Herr Metzradt, ordered the building of a 'small church'. The order was completed in 1337. In the course of the centuries the church paced through many changes, extensions and repairs. In 1550 only the church survived the village fire. At the end of the 19th century the separate church tower gave way to the present tower building.

The wooden carved altar forms the church's main decoration. It was gifted to the church in 1686 by the then collator Karl von Ponikau. The stained windows were installed at the end of the 19th century.
In 1857 was the baptism cradle restored whose baptismal font was a present from 1624.

The old organ from 1760 was destroyed during the war in 1945. The present organ was 1947/48 installed into the church and in 2004 completely restored. One of the oldest bells of the Lausitz is located at the tower. Altogether 3 bells ring to the church service. The large and the small bell stem from the 14th century, the middle-sized one was cast in 1628. The bells were rung by hand until1996.

2 gravestones at the churchyard remember the victims of two word wars. Several bullet holes from actions in 1945 can still be seen at the church wall.
