Sohland at the Spree

First recorded already at the beginning of the 13th resp the middle of the 14th century. Sohland at the Spree with its villages Sohland, Taubenheim and Wehrsdorf presents itself not as an aging village but as a lovely place with charm that's appreciated by its citizens and guests like to come back again and again. The merging of three holiday villages into a big community means a valuable enrichment for the region. Not only that 8.300 people can call Sohland at the Spree their home but also the tourism profited from the bigger offer for guests. Tourism exists for nearly 100 years. Traveller from near and afar let themselves be bewitched from the idyll of the mountainous countryside. The countryside and the nature are still the pound with which the hosts can still today grow exuberantly. To get away from everyday life, enjoy rest and good air, to let one's mind wander - all that works on walks on well sign-posted hiking paths around the ca 40m² big community. Fine views far into the land at good weather from the Prinz-Friedrich-August-Turm (450m above sea level) even into the Riesengebirge compensate for some ascents.

From three churches the ringing of the bell greets you.  Umgebinde-houses, witnesses of a noticeable craftsmanship, stand as representative of the 18th/19th century typical building style in the Oberlausitz are under monumental protection. Especially at these farmhouses, mostly built from wood and clay, one can discover many endearing details: carved window frames, timber set made of granite, noble front doors, artistically scaling, old framework and last but not least wonderful sundials. 17 of these alternative timekeepers are in Taubenheim. Old, mighty and smaller granite troughs stand as witnesses of the stonemason art of the last century mostly in Wehrsdorf.

Nature and theme trails introduce history, flora and fauna. Insight into the living and working world of our forefathers offers the oldest Umgebinde-house in the district Bautzen, which has been made into a Local Museum and a permanent exhibition shows agricultural equipment.

The reservoir Sohland, first barrage of the still young Spree has developed into a recreation area, boats service and next to it a adventure playground draws many guests. Above this facility at the Kälbersteinen (480m above sea-level) is the Waldbühne situated whose music and theatre presentations during summer have developed into a visitor magnet. The observatory "Bruno Bürgel" enjoys international recognition and likes also to offer laymen a fascinating insight into the universe.

All four seasons offer in our border region something special.  Has the first spring left the lowlands a second spring can be enjoyed in the upper land. The summer lures with swimming fun at the Erlebnisbad Taubenheim and at the Waldbad Wehrsdorf. The golden autumn is ideal for long or short walking tours. Locals and guests can take pleasure at the Skisport Centre and at the ski lift, on laid cross-country course and on tobogganing slopes. Holiday apartments, guests and hotel rooms are comfortable and not expensive. A great number of inns invite refined dining. Guests are always welcome in Sohland, Taubenheim and Wehrsdorf!
