Oberlausitz - beloved homeland

The founding of the Sechsstädtebundes (Six-City-Union) in the 14th century, a kind of defence and trade union helped the region to prosper and thrive. The cities Bautzen, Görlitz, Kamenz, Löbau, Zittau and Lauban (today Poland) became unmistakable successful cities.

Bautzen is with its 17 towers and bastions the 'City of Towers'. In Görlitz ca 3500 buildings that are classified as historical monuments from late Gothic and Renaissance, from Baroque, Wilhelminian Style and Art Nouveau form the townscape. In Kamenz finden you will find the birth and working place of the great German poet Gottfried Ephraim Lessing. Löbau is the founding city of the Six-City-Union. The city's landmark is the cast iron tower on the Löbauer Hill. Zittau, the town at the three-country-corner fascinates visitors through imposing Renaissance- and Baroque houses, several fountains from different epochs. Many other towns offer also interesting things.

Many well preserved Umgebinde- houses give the villages a unique charm. During the 16th century a building style arose that combined the Slavic woodblock building style with the half-timbered style. The speciality of the building style is that part of the house, namely the block-parlour, is totally separate from the house.  The „Umgebinde“ carries the in half-timbered style built upper floor. During the heydays of home weaving this building style was very helpful, as the vibrations of the looms weren't transmitted to the rest of the house.

Probably the oldest Umgebinde-house, the rider's house is situated  in Neusalza-Spremberg. Especially lovely Umgebinde-houses can be found in Obercunnersdorf, Großschönau, Waltersdorf, Jonsdorf, Oppach, Seifhennersdorf, Eibau, Dittelsdorf and Cunewalde.
