Gate to the Oberlausitz



The little town is situated at the fringe of the Oberlausitz Highlands. The Wesenitz flows through the town.
Part of Bischofswerda are the villages Belmsdorf, Geißmannsdorf and Schönbrunn (Šumborn), Neu-Schönbrunn and Kynitzsch (Kinič), Großdrebnitz (Drjewnica), Goldbach and Weickersdorf

1227 wurde Bischofswerda was first recorded in 1227. It got its first city wall in 1288; but was only recorded as town in 1361. The Stadtherren (lords of the town) were until the 16th century the bishops from Meißen. In 1559 the last bishop from Meißen, Johann von Haugwitz, had to relinquish the town together with the Stolpen to the Elector of Saxony.
