Spree- Long-Distance Cycling Route
image author: cm Bautzen If you hear the name Spree you probably think first of Berlin or the Spreewald.
But the river has its source in the Oberlausitz and flows its first 120km through Saxony before it enters into Brandenburg land near Zerre. And these kilometres are special: If you want to experience agricultural diversity you have chosen the right route. Its starting point is situated ca 25 kilometres north of the Zittauer Mountains, directly at one of the three Spree springs at Kottmar.

The path runs through some of the prettiest villages of the Oberlausitzer Highlands with their characteristic 'Umgebinde' houses (special house type) towards Bautzen. On the way you'll meet some remarkable things: sun-dials in Taubenheim, one of the oldest 'Umgebinde' houses, the "Reiterhaus" in Neusalza-Spremberg and one of the richest fitted baroque churches in Schirgiswalde.

The 1000-year Bautzen, capital of the Sorbs, with well maintained fortifications, towers and the Orten-Castle. The historical city centre with the late-gothic Petri-Cathedral, restored old houses and interesting museums makes a longer stay worth while.

Then you are off through flat countryside with lots of forest and water: the Oberlausitzer heath and lake landscape with same-named Biosphere reserve. In this environment of the numerous century-old and still used fish ponds settled rare animals and plants.
The route then runs through the Spree forest to Erkner (to Berlin). The route profile has different requirements for the cyclist's condition: From Kottmar to Bautzen hilly land dominates then follows a more or less flat area to the Brandenburg border. The route is well developed.
Appearance: partly hilly route profile in the southern section, good roadway support
