Wittichenau
image author: Lausitz Enzyklopädie

The town of Wittichenau with its 11 incorporated villages is imbedded between protected landscapes and conservation areas. The villages are: Neudorf, Brischko, Keula, Hoske, Rachlau, Kotten, Saalau, Sollschwitz, Dubrig, Maukendorf and Spohla.
Every year thousands of tourists flock here to relax in the intact natural landscape of the biosphere reserve Oberlausitzer heath and lake landscape and at the Dubringer fen.  Visitor magnets are also two traditional festivals in Wittichenau: the Wittichenauer Carnival and Easter Riding. At this time a state of siege is always proclaimed, as there are more visitors in town than residents.

High standard of living is shown by intact and modern infrastructure, a positive developing population as well as distinct middle-class trade and commerce. The over 750-year old town has the status of a economical lower centre in the district Kamenz.

Here Germans and Sorbs are living together in unity and harmony. There is no other town that still had ca 35 percentage of Sorbs population at the beginning of the 21st century. The Sorbian population concentrates at around 85 percent in the incorporated eleven villages while it's the opposite in the original town.
