Palace Hoyerswerda
image author: Peter Hennig Built as moated castle in the 13th century on an island in the lowlands of the Schwarzen Elster, the facility served until the 15th century as border fortress between Bohemia and Brandenburg.
After several destructions through warlike operations and fires was the castle rebuilt in 1592 as a three-storey renaissance
palace. In 1705 Ursula Katharina Duchess and Imperial Princess von Teschen and created a palace garden, where today the Hoyerswerda zoo is situated.
The residence became public property in 1781. The listed palace has been extensively redeveloped since 1990.
Today is houses the Tourist and City Information, the Stadtmuseum and the city archive. Cultural events also take place here.
