The biosphere reserve "Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft" encompasses a representative section of the Oberlausitz lake area, which forms together with the Niederlausitz part in the north middle-Europe's largest interconnected lake landscape. An extensive mosaic of different usage of fishing, agriculture and forestry accrued here during the century-long development history as well as its characteristic settlement structures. According to the high complexity of such a large protected reserve is the administration of the biosphere especially important; both as a in general accessibility and also to be able to fall back in the political environ on a predominantly accepted integrated planning concept.
Tourism in the Oberlausitz heather and lake lanscape has not yet been fully developed
areas in the Oberlausitz. The area, where agriculture, forestry and fish farming are dominating was of little importance for the tourism without the newly created bicycle trails. Especially the frog cycle trail runs along the prettiest romantic seeming lakes, forests and meadows.
The lakes, used for fish farming are not ideal for swimming due to their shallowness and sediments. But the fish harvesting is an annual tradition. Around 1923 the fish farms of Guttau, Kauppa, Milkel and Königswartha were recommended as worthwhile fish harvesting in late-autumn and for nature experiences. Swimming and water sports only recently became significant through the flooding of surface mining rest holes (Knappensee, Silbersee, Olbasee, Blaue Adria) in close vicinity to the biosphere reserve.
