W Kawkazu. Na slědach Hendricha Božidara Wjele.
In the Caucasus. On the trails of Heinrich Theodor Wehle
The Art Foundation of the state Saxony-Anhalt and the Foundation for the Sorbian Peoples tendered in 2006 two scholarships for Armenia. Basis for the co-operation between the two foundations was the exhibition project about life and work of the landscape draughtsman Heinrich Theodor Wehle (1778-1805), which was initiated in 2005/2006 through museums and other Saxon institutions as well as Saxony-Anhalts. Wehle was the first west European artist, who travelled with an expedition through the Caucasus and also through Armenia in the services of the Tsar, between 1802 and 1803 and captured this in his drawings.
Nominated for the working scholarship was the Sorbian graphic designer Sophie Natuschke (born 1950) and draughtsman Florian Bielefeld (born 1977) from Halle. Both artists were able to collect impressions on the trails of their fellow-countryman Heinrich Theodor Wehle in the Caucasus and translate these artistically. They travelled to the original locations of Wehle's travel tour and reflected from their own artistic view in very different perceptions the sights: Sophie Natuschke translated her locally created sketches later into cyanotypes; Florian Bielefeld's trail search was expressed in meticulous pencil drawings as well as artistic photographs.
The result of the study trip were exhibited in the summer of 2007 at the Armenian Centre for Contemporary Experimental Art (ACCEA) in the Armenian capital Jerewan as well as in autumn of the same year at the Anhalt Painting Gallery in Dessau.
Now the Sorbian Museum in Bautzen shows the artistic translated 'Caucasian' impressions by the two scholarship holders.
