Guided Tour Bautzen
Bautzen is often called the "Town of towers" and when a traveller crosses the Spree bridge for the first time and the panorama of the Bautzener old town comes into view he will be charmed by the picture. 17 towers and bastions make the Bautzener townscape distinctive. Some of those were redeveloped in the last years, so now the Reichenturm, the Schülerturm and the Ortenburg shine in newly won beauty. Also the Town Hall, another landmark of Bautzen, radiates again over the Hauptmarkt. Some people fall in love during a stroll through the town with the many baroque middle-class houses. Some are redeveloped like the ones at the well worth seeing Fleischmarkt, others still await the rejuvenating cure - with nearly 1500 protected historical buildings in the town no easy undertaking.
There is a lot to experience along the former outer town wall: After a walk through winding, bumpy alleys the Ortenburg invites you, the Alte Wasserkunst is witness of the technical resourcefulness of our ancestors. How many fires, wars, plague epidemics and other horrors gnawed at the Bautzener will of survival, will a visit to the town's museum reveal. Many things have scarcity value in the 1000-year old town of the Lausitz. Like the cathedral St. Petri, as it combines still today peacefully Protestant and Catholic denomination. Or the Reichenturm, the "Schiefe Turm" (curiously crooked tower) of Bautzen, whose ascent is an absolute must.
