Schirgiswalde

The village Schirgiswalde was first recorded in the year 1346. The village was more or less completely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and depopulated. The landlored at that time obtained in 1665 the charter of a city for Schirgiswalde to promote redevelopment and economical upswing. The little town was later bought by the cathedral chapter Bauzen, which had the lordship and jurisdiction over Schirigswalde until the middle of the 19th century.

When in 1635 the Oberlausitz became Saxon, Schirgiswalde stayed with Bohemia as exclave. That is also the reason why Schirgiswalde, as the rest of Bohemain were re-catholized after the Thirty Years' War.

The island location of the Bohemian town amidst the Saxon area remained until 1809. In the following 36 years the town's state affiliation was unsettled because tedious diplomatic negotiations between Austria and Saxony about area exchange were not successful. Already t the end of the 28th century Austria as well as Saxony sought boundary adjustments.

In the wake of the unlucky war for Austria against Napoleon in the year 1809, Schirigswalde was under military occupation at the end of the year 1810 by Saxony, which was in an alliance with France. Since that time Austria basically didn't perform any sovereign rights in the little town. But it was still considered part of the Bohemian crown as the citizens were still bound by the subject's oath. A formal handover to Saxony was hampered by a renewed war in 1813 (Saxony on the side of France against Austria and its ally).

Only in 1845 was the handover of Schirgiswalde finally stipulated and executed. There was no real authority of state in the meantime, which was taken advantage of by robbers, smugglers and political refugees.
