Umgebinde-house / Umgebinde-land Oberlausitz

There is a region in Europe's middle, which has to thank architecture for its unique and distinctive character: the building of Umgebinde-houses. Nowhere else in Europe was this folk building style preserved in such density. Roughly 19.000 of these listed buildings, individual rebuilt and restored under modern aspects are at many places eye-catcher and centre of rural life.

When you discover the unique Umgebinde-houses you will also be delighted by the charming area where they have been built. Because the Umgebinde-land with its detailed decorated houses that is most of all a feeling of being alive. There were the Oberlausitz, North-Bohemia and Lower Silesia meet and form the three-border region; embedded by mountains, rivers and valley.

image author: Jürgen Bollmann Oberlausitz The Oberlausitz and North Bohemia were ca 900 years ago colonised by Germans, Czechs, Sorbs and North Bohemia by Roma. The dominant industries were textile and glass production as well as agriculture.
The Slav building style was the block architecture. The east expansion started in the 10th century and the Teutons (Thuringians, Franks and Flemings) settled onto the land. They built half-timbered houses.
The development of the Umgebinde-house as mixed form of both styles could start. The architecture was first mentioned in 1580 at the "Hirtenhaus" in Friedland.
The development start of the Umgebinde-houses is dated 15th century.
