Follow the trails of Martin Pumphut
image author: Jürgen Bollmann The legend says Martin Pumphut was the Oberlausitz's walking rogue.
He was born in the little village Spohla near Hoyerswerda, learned the miller's trade, spoke Sorbian and German and was always up to playing tricks. On his walking tour he trailed from mil to mill.
He stayed if he liked the place and when the work and accommodation was likeable he would tell jokes, funny stories and entertained the people with magic tricks. But if he was ill-treated, people were nasty, malicious, cruel or mean he would pay them back with all sorts of pranks. His 'magic stick' was his trademark: He carried out magic tricks with his high pointed and wide-brimmed hat.
