About the origin of the Kamenzer Forstfest:
It is supposed that there is a  link with the benediction of the Marien altar in the medieval church St. Marien on the 24th of August 1355.
This 24h of August - the Saint Bartholomew day - is a very much observed public holiday in the catholic region.
It is known from cultural-historical examinations that general festivals derived from church festivals with processions and parades.
The Forstfest has been staged in its present for over 130 years. After determining the former headmaster Wilhelm Leuner students and teachers form a procession through Kamenz on the Monday of the Bartholomew week at 1pm.
To the amazed spectators it seems that the streets turn into an ocean of flowers. The children are dressed in white and adorned with sashes. The sashes mirrir the colours of the city, the Oberlausitz, Saxony and the nation.
The procession being accompanied by banner carrying groups, marching bands and orchestra.

During the whole time a large funfair with rides and gastronomically facilities is being put up at the Kamenzer Forst (a piece of woodland near the town). There is also rustic entertainment music and hearty food.
Attraction is the fireworks, which takes place on the Wednesday evening.  Every year thousands of people admire this great event.
The closure of the festival week consist on the Thursday at 1.30pm a repeated procession by the students and the evening lantern and torch march through the festive illuminated streets of Kamenz.
