In the heart of Bischofswerda is a natural oasis. It is Saxony's smallest animal park, which was founded in 1957. This pretty park-like facility is home to ca. 300 animals in 60 species.
Along the lines of: "With bear and & Co in the smallest Zoo“, devotes the Animal Park Bischofswerda itself to the bears. The brown bears, mother Olympia and son Balu have now settled in their new enclosure. This is equipped with climbing elements, granite cave and a large water basin.
The bear became the leading animal of the newly designed animal park. Animals who look like bears or live in their environment can be found here.

There are also rare indigenous animal species at the Park

The little Owl
The little owl has always been there; humans made its survival hard until it was nearly extinct. It numbers were so aplenty in the northern Harz foothills in Saxony-Anhalt that they were no rarity. The last nest was spotted in 1984.
By now a lot is being done for the preservation of this species.
The animal park wants to contribute and make one of their aviaries available for the little owl.
In co-operation with the Animal Park Hexentanzplatz in Thale
new breeding pairs are being established to secure the animal's future.

The Lynx
The European lynx is common in Scandinavia and Asia. It was wiped out in Germany in 1888, but is now again being renaturalised.
The cat, which is not dangerous to humans, finds favourable living conditions in the thick forest of the Central German Uplands.
The animal park shows Europe's largest wild cat and point to its endangerment.

Interesting for Young and Old

The park has an educational trail with info-signs, which describes the history of every animal. There are also many different guided tours for every generation. There is the Historical Guided Tour, which gives insights into the development of the animal park, right from the start. The Animally Guided Tour orientates itself along the lines of "Experience Animals", and is especially suitable for families.
A special highlight is the Bear Guided Tour. The visitor gains information about the theme bear. One learns how the bear stands in relation to other animals, humans and the eco-system. This tour is being offered separately for children, adults and senior citizens.
In addition there is a Special Guided Tour for handicapped persons. Here they are able to built tight contact with pets like rabbits, guinea pigs and ponies.
Prior booking is necessary for all guided tours.
